Women in Black
Women in Black (WiB) represents a global network of women united in their dedication to peace, justice, and opposition to violence, militarism, and injustice. Operating informally, they advocate for mutual support among women experiencing various forms of adversity worldwide. Their focus includes challenging their governments’ militaristic policies. WiB’s trademark action involves silent, non-violent vigils by women, often dressed in black, to protest against violence, war, or militarism. These actions, emphasizing mourning and activism, symbolize women’s defiance against the logic of war.
WiB’s impact extends internationally, organizing numerous actions and conferences worldwide. The movement doesn’t have a formal structure but adopts a feminist perspective, recognizing the interconnectedness of male violence against women and societal control. They highlight women’s distinct experiences in conflicts, advocating for women’s voices to be heard and acted upon in peace activism. WiB empowers women to choose non-violent forms of action, offering solidarity and a platform to address societal inequalities
Vimochana is proud to host a branch of Women in Black, as the key to ending domestic violence is to end all violence.
